ILLINOIS STATE POLICE INVESTIGATE OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING IN CHAMPAIGN

Illinois State Police (ISP) Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) Zone 5 was requested by the Champaign Police Department (CPD) to investigate a fatal officer involved shooting that occurred on May 19, 2021 at approximately 3:24 a.m. The Multijurisdictional Investigative Team was activated consisting of the University of Illinois, Champaign County and the Champaign Police Department lead by the Illinois State Police. Preliminary investigative details indicate that CPD responded to the 2400 block of north Neil Street in Champaign, IL for a domestic disturbance. Two responding CPD officers exited their vehicles and encountered an armed individual and gunfire was exchanged. During the exchange of gunfire, the armed individual was fatally wounded, as was one of the officers. The second officer was hospitalized. Champaign Police ask that anyone who has additional information to please contact police at 217- 351-4545. Arrangements can be made for information to be shared privately. Calls are routed to a third-party national call center that receives your information, completes a tips information form, and then passes the information to the appropriate law enforcement agency. Caller ID tracking is not utilized by Crime Stoppers and conversations are not recorded. Crime Stoppers will pay a reward of $1,000 for information leading to the arrest of the person(s) responsible for these crimes. The Illinois State Police DCI Zone 5 is leading the investigation and is being assisted by the Urbana Police Department, the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office, University of Illinois Police Department, Champaign County Coroner’s Office and the Champaign County State’s Attorney’s Office. More information will be provided as it becomes available. This investigation is open and ongoing. No additional information will be released at this time by ISP Zone
