Patricia Marie (Fordyce) Merkle, 94, formerly of Loda and Danforth, IL, passed away on February 13, 2025 at Faith Place in Danforth.
Pat was born on August 15, 1930 to Dr. Alexander Wm. and Cecile A. (Baker) Fordyce in Gilman, IL.
She was raised in Gilman, where she attended local schools and completed one year of study at St. Frances College in Joliet, IL.
In 1951, Pat married the love of her life, Eugene Wm. Merkle, and together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and devotion. The following year, they joyfully welcomed their first child, beginning a family that would grow to include ten children in total.
Raising children was her truest calling, and she poured herself into the role with a heart full of love, wisdom, and dedication. Pat was a natural teacher, guiding and nurturing her children with the patience of a saint. She ran her home with remarkable organization and efficiency, creating a warm, welcoming space where everyone felt loved and cared for.
Pat had a quick sense of humor, and her personality was as warm as her hugs, which will be remembered by all who were fortunate enough to receive them. She carried herself with a grace that touched everyone around her, whether in her quiet demeanor or the thoughtful way she cared for others. Pat was a lifelong member of the Immaculate Conception Church of Gilman, IL. She was active in the CCW and at one time Woman of the Year. Her faith was the cornerstone of her life, providing strength and guidance through every challenge. Whether quilting, crafting, or cooking, Pat possessed an incredible talent that she shared with her family. Her homemade quilts were masterpieces, her crafts inspired creativity, and her meals were exceptional. In particular, her traditions of making chocolate turkeys at Thanksgiving and Santa Claus sugar cookies at Christmas have been lovingly passed down to her grandchildren, a testament to her nurturing spirit and commitment to family tradition.
Pat leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and kindness. She is survived by eight of her children: David, Kevin, Gayle Matt, Lisa (Jim) Redenius, John (Mindy), Mary Bargmann, James (Julie), Robert (Kirsten) Merkle, 19 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, “Merk”; two children, Stuart and Ross; a daughter-in-law, Diane; and son-in-law, Bo Bargmann; her brothers, Robert, Dr. James (Wina), Ed (Betty) and Dr. Tom Fordyce.
Though Pat may no longer walk among us, her love, wisdom, and the countless memories she created will continue to live on in the hearts of her family. Her gentle spirit and unwavering faith will forever inspire those who knew her.
