Mary Beverly Stiegman, age 94 of Thawville

Mary Beverly Stiegman, age 94 of Thawville passed away on Saturday June 23, 2018 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. She was born in Ogden, IA on February 13, 1924 to Amicas and Clara Mertens Van Steenberghe whose business was importing Belgian work-horses and farming. Following high school, she joined other women aiding the war effort by learning telegraphy and becoming a depot agent for the Central Illinois Railroad. She worked for the Illinois Central Railroad for 7 years and eventually resided in Thawville, IL. There, she met and married Marvin L. Stiegman on June 12, 1948 in Thawville. They farmed successfully near Thawville for many years. Beverly and Marvin celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary 11 days prior to her passing.

Mrs. Stiegman is survived by her husband, Marvin, two children, Dr. Gregory Stiegmann of Denver, CO and Eric Stiegman of Thawville, daughter-in-law, Dr. Sarah J. Chilton and two grandchildren, Captain (Dr.) Regan Stiegmann-Stafford of Colorado Springs, CO and Andrew A.V. Stiegmann of Honolulu, HI. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Naoma Chipman.

Beverly was very active her entire life. She understood and appreciated her obligation to be a good steward of the land and all the creatures that lived from it. She enjoyed gardening as well as nurturing, propagating and understanding trees and had a keen interest in preserving the beauty and natural flora and fauna of Central Illinois.

Private funeral services will be held on Wednesday June 27, 2018 at the Knapp Funeral Home in Onarga. Pastor Brian King will officiate. Burial will be in Ridgeland Twp. Cemetery in Thawville.

Memorials may be made to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Thawville.
