Phyllis Hartman, 87, of Sheldon,

Phyllis Hartman, 87, of Sheldon, Illinois, passed away on Monday, May 14, 2018. She was born on February 19, 1931 in a Model A in the parking lot of IMH Hospital, Watseka, IL, the daughter of Harry Brubaker and Emma Thalia (Beard-Barrows) Brubaker. Phyllis married Robert Hartman on July 1, 1956 at the Sheldon Methodist Church. Phyllis was a Teacher for English, French, Girls PE, and Drama at Milford. Elementary Vocal Teacher at Bryce Ash Grove Grade School and Stockland Grade School. Librarian and Teachers Aid at Grace Baptist Academy from 1978 until 1983. She was also a Farm Wife. A Member of the 4-H Sheldon Square Shooters Agriculture Club where she held all four offices, Sheldon Sun Beams all girls 4-H Club where she also held all four offices. 4-H Leader from 1967 until 1973, Aberdeen Angus Purebred Association County. She sang at the Chicago Land Music Festival and State Fair while in chorus in 1947 and received a scholarship to Duquoin. Mrs. Hartman was also a Member of the Music Camp Woman’s Club, Egas, Phi Alpha Omega Drama Club, President on The Independent Woman’s Organization, Youth Director at Asberry Church from 1953 to 1955, Twin State Woman, and the Pembroke Township Auxiliary. Additionally, she was a Member of Home Extension for 12 years at U of I, room mother for each of her children, Directed Traveling Youth Choir (All Stars of Light), Pioneer Club and Sunbeams at Trinity, and part of the Agricultural leaders in the Farm Bureau. Phyllis also filled in her time as a Secretary for the Kankakee Methodist Church, but she is most well known for Hartman Packaging which she owned and operated for over 20 years with her husband. She enjoyed designing and sewing clothes, notably making five wedding dresses, making and designing wedding cakes, and poetry. She played the organ for the churches that she served. Phyllis also enjoyed being a Sunday School teacher, which she did for 45 years. She embroidered hundreds of pillow cases for gifts. Surviving Mrs. Hartman is her sons, Todd (Margo) Hartman of Charleston, IL, Marty (Julie) Hartman of Greenville, SC; daughters, Laurie (Roger) Poindexter of Fowler, IN, and Gena Hafstrom of Brook, IN; sister, Marjorie (Robert E.) Hix of Pine Grove, CA; grandchildren, Josh (Megan) Shufflebarger, Ian Shepard, Taylor Shepard, William (Amy) Hornbuckle, Matthew Poindexter, Daniel (Terry) Poindexter, Christa (Christopher) Karge, Jake (Ashley) Hartman, Emma Hartman; great-grandchildren, Tristan Brown, Josie Ray Sylvester, Adriana and Allyson Gonzales, Eli and Josie Hornbuckle, and Jordyn Poindexter Saide Rae Sylvester, Sara and David Gonzalez, Ryan Lane, Sophia, Coltyn, and Kinley Shufflebarger; and many nieces and nephews. She is also preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert; two sisters, Nancy Brubaker and Mary Wells; and one grandson, Stephen Poindexter. A Gathering of Friends will be held on Thursday, May 17, 2018 from 3-4pm, at Trinity Church in Watseka. Memorial Service will follow on Thursday, May 17, 2018 at 4:00 pm, at Trinity Church in Watseka. Pastors Marty Schoenleber, Ryan Mustard, and Bart Koester will all officiate. Burial will take place at Sheldon Cemetery at a later date. Memorials in Mrs. Hartman's name can be made to IMH Hospice, Missionaries, or Trinity Caring for Others Fund.
